Kiters and wingers go out when it is windy, and often stay out for hours. Cumulative wind-on-wet-ear exposure is higher here than in almost any other water sport.
Water arrives at speed
A bad landing or a loop gone wrong puts water into your ear with force behind it. Wind-driven spray is a constant fine soak on top of that.
Hearing your kite matters
Canopy flutter, lines loading up, someone shouting a warning on a crowded beach. Kiting is a sport where you use sound to know what your gear is doing behind you.

Fit for the crash, not the cruise
Riding upwind on flat water asks nothing of a plug. Getting dragged after a botched jump asks everything. Size the wing for the worst moment of your session, not the average one.
If you ride with a helmet, fit the plugs first and route the leash clear of the strap.

Kitesurfing
Big air means hard landings and long drags. Size the wing up - the plug has to survive being dragged downwind, not just cruising upwind.
Windsurfing
Long sessions, constant spray and a boom close to your head. You need to hear the rig loading up, so a plug that kills all sound is a safety problem, not just an annoyance.
Wing foiling
More time in the water than either, especially while you are learning. Repeated full immersion at head height is exactly the exposure pattern to protect against.

Surfer's ear is not a surfing-only condition - it is an exposure condition, and it shows up in kiters, wingers and windsurfers for exactly the same reason. Cold water in the canal plus wind chill across a wet ear, repeated over seasons, causes exostosis.

Questions from this sport
Will they survive a hard landing?
Use the largest wing that stays comfortable for a long session. The leash keeps the pair together and easy to recover.
Can I wear them with a helmet?
Yes, and most riders should. Fit the plugs first, then route the leash so the helmet strap does not run across it, then buckle up.
Will wind noise still be reduced?
Yes, noticeably. SEAR Plugs cut 9 dB in the high frequencies, where wind roar and splash noise sit (H 9 dB, SNR 6 dB, tested to EN 352-2 on 16 people). Voices, waves and your surroundings stay clear. That includes the sound of your kite loading up.
Does the same apply to windsurfing and wing?
Yes. All three are wind-dependent, high-spray disciplines with the same exposure pattern and the same need to hear your rig.
What about foiling specifically?
Foiling is drier while riding but the falls are faster and less predictable. Fit for the fall - a foil crash is one of the few impacts that can shift a well-seated plug.
Can I get spares?
We do not sell spare parts yet. Riders in strong wind go through XL wings faster than anyone else, so a second pair in the kite bag is worth it.
