Size the wing for retention, not for the swell
The wing is what keeps the plug in through a duck dive. The size that feels right on dry land is not always the one that holds through a wipeout, so judge it in the water: if a plug works loose, go one wing size up on that ear and leave the other alone.
Keep the leash routed behind your ear and under your hood if you wear one. It is designed to keep the pair together and easier to recover - not to make them impossible to lose.

Surfer's ear is a surfing problem
Exostosis - extra bone growth in the ear canal - is caused by years of repeated cold-water and wind exposure. That is why it turns up in surfers rather than in the general population, and why it is usually found late.

Will they stay in through a duck dive?
That depends on your wing size, which is why all four are in the box. Size up on the ear that moves. The leash keeps the pair together and easy to recover if one does come out.
Can I wear them under a hood?
Yes. Fit the plugs first, route the leash behind the ear, then pull the hood over. A hood also adds its own wind protection.
Will I still hear a set behind me?
The acoustic pathway allows ambient sound to pass through, so you stay connected to what is happening around you. It is quieter than open ears - it is not the cut-off silence of a solid plug.
Do I need them for warm-water surf trips?
Surfer's ear is caused by cold water and wind, so a tropical trip is lower exposure on that count. Water in the ear leading to infection is a separate problem and does not care about temperature.
What about balance and dizziness?
Cold water hitting the ear canal is a common trigger for brief disorientation. Reducing how much water reaches the canal is one of the reasons surfers give for wearing plugs.
