Meet the Founders of SEAR Plugs: Building Better Ear Protection for Water Sports

SEAR Plugs didn’t start in a boardroom. It started in the water.

Founded by lifelong water-sports enthusiasts, SEAR Plugs was created to solve a problem that most surfers, swimmers and paddlers ignoreear damage caused by repeated exposure to water and wind.

In this in-depth interview, the founders of SEAR Plugs share how the brand was born, why existing earplugs failed water athletes, and what makes SEAR different in a crowded market of generic ear protection.

Q: For those who don’t know you yet, can you introduce yourselves?

Andrea Ferrario – Co-Founder, SEAR Plugs

I’m Andrea. I’ve spent most of my life in and around the water surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, wing foiling, traveling whenever possible to places where water sports are part of everyday life.

Over the years, I started noticing how many people around me were dealing with ear infections, hearing issues, or even surgery due to long-term water exposure. I went through some of it myself. At the same time, I was frustrated by the lack of good solutions: either uncomfortable earplugs, products that blocked all sound, or options that felt overpriced for what they delivered.

SEAR Plugs started from that frustration. I didn’t want a “medical-looking” product. I wanted something practical, affordable, and built for people who actually spend time in the water. SEAR is a reflection of how I live and how I want to stay active long term without compromising health.

Julia Raciniewska – Co-Founder, SEAR Plugs

I’m Julia. Water has always been a big part of my life too, whether through surfing, foiling, swimming, ocean activities, or traveling to coastal places where being in the sea is just part of the culture. What pushed me toward SEAR was seeing how often ear health is overlooked, especially by people who are otherwise very careful about their gear and safety. Ear issues are often dismissed as “normal” until they become a real problem.

From the beginning, I focused a lot on comfort, usability, and making sure SEAR Plugs were something people would actually want to wear regularly not just once and forget. For me, SEAR is about prevention, accessibility, and helping people enjoy water sports for years without unnecessary damage.

Q: Let’s start from the beginning. How did SEAR Plugs come to life?

SEAR Founders:
SEAR Plugs was born out of frustration. We both spend a huge amount of time in the water—surfing, swimming, kayaking, traveling to different spots—and we kept seeing the same issue over and over again.

People were either:

  • Not wearing ear protection at all

  • Or wearing earplugs that completely blocked sound and felt unsafe

We experienced swimmer’s ear, recurring infections, discomfort, and friends who eventually needed surgery for surfer’s ear. Yet the available solutions were either too expensive, uncomfortable, or simply not designed for real water-sports conditions.

That gap is where SEAR started.

Q: What problem were you trying to solve that other earplugs weren’t?

SEAR Founders:
Most earplugs are designed for noise reduction, not for active environments like surfing or kayaking.

Water athletes need to:

  • Hear instructions

  • Hear waves, paddles, boats, people

  • Stay aware of what’s happening around them

Traditional earplugs either fall out, block sound completely, or create pressure that feels wrong in the water.

SEAR Plugs were designed specifically as water-sports ear protection—keeping water and wind out while still letting sound in.

Q: Why is ear protection such a big deal in water sports?

SEAR Founders:
Because damage builds quietly.

Cold water and wind can cause:

  • Swimmer’s ear (infections from trapped water)

  • Surfer’s ear (bone growth inside the ear canal)

  • Long-term hearing issues

Surfer’s ear in particular is irreversible. Once it develops, surgery is the only option.

Most people only think about ear protection after they’ve already had problems. SEAR exists to change that mindset—from treatment to prevention.

Q: What makes SEAR Plugs different from other water earplugs?

SEAR Founders:
Three things: function, comfort, and accessibility.

1. Built for real water use

SEAR Plugs are designed to stay secure during movement—waves, rolls, falls, strong currents.

2. Sound awareness

They reduce water and wind intrusion without isolating you from your environment.

3. Accessibility

We wanted high-quality ear protection to be affordable, not a luxury product.

SEAR isn’t about over-engineering. It’s about building something that works session after session.

Q: Who are SEAR Plugs made for?

SEAR Founders:
Anyone who spends time in the water.

That includes:

  • Surfers and kitesurfers

  • Open-water swimmers

  • Kayakers and whitewater paddlers

  • Divers and freedivers

  • Casual swimmers who want to avoid infections

You don’t have to be a professional athlete. If water is part of your life, protecting your ears should be part of your routine.

Q: How important was testing and feedback in development?

SEAR Founders:
Critical.

We tested SEAR Plugs across:

  • Different water temperatures

  • Saltwater and freshwater

  • Multiple sports and skill levels

Feedback came from friends, athletes, instructors, and everyday users. Comfort, fit, and reliability mattered more than flashy features.

If something didn’t work in real conditions, it didn’t make the cut.

Q: SEAR feels community-driven. Was that intentional?

SEAR Founders:
Absolutely.

SEAR isn’t just a product—it’s a reflection of a lifestyle. We’re part of the same community we build for.

That’s why you’ll see:

  • Real athletes, not stock models

  • User-generated content from the water

  • Honest conversations about safety and health

Trust matters, especially when you’re selling protective gear.

Q: What’s next for SEAR Plugs?

SEAR Founders:
We’re focused on:

  • Improving materials and fit

  • Expanding education around ear health in water sports

  • Building products that integrate naturally into an active lifestyle

We want SEAR to be the brand people trust when it comes to water-sports ear protection, not just another accessory.

Q: What advice would you give to someone new to water sports?

SEAR Founders:
Respect the water and respect your body.

Invest in proper gear early. Learn from people more experienced than you. And don’t ignore things that seem “minor,” like ear health. Those are the issues that come back later.

Prevention is always easier than recovery.

Q: Lastly, What’s new in the Pipeline?

SEAR Founders:
We’re very focused on the future, but in a deliberate way.

On one side, we’re continuing to refine what SEAR Plugs already do improving fit, durability, and overall performance based on real feedback from people using them in the water every week.

At the same time, we’re working quietly on something bigger. It’s still deeply connected to the same core problem we started with: staying protected, aware, and connected while moving through water and wind. It builds on everything we’ve learned so far, but it goes beyond simple ear protection.

We’re not rushing it, and we’re not ready to talk about details yet. But it’s designed with the same philosophy as SEAR: practical, performance-driven, and made for people who live active lives around water.

For now, our priority is doing things properly testing, refining, and making sure whatever comes next genuinely earns its place in the water.
